High School Open House At I.S 126Q - November 14, 2017

Image
On November 14, 2017, Ms. Tellez had invited me to do a High School Open House at I.S. 126Q. I was given this certain opportunity because I'm an alumni of that school itself. I remember graduating and making great memories in that school so having the chance to go back was something to certainly look forward to. I went in order to represent the Web Academy alongside Minhaj. It started at about 4:30pm and would finish at almost 7pm. We had to set up our tables and presentation in the class that we were given for our school only. That's how it was for all the high schools on the third floor. We waited about 10 minutes for parents to come in and to my surprise, we did have a lot parents interested in us. I was the one doing most of the topic and briefly trying to present the huge benefits of the Video and Web Academies in Information Technology High School. I feel like my words did reach a lot of students and parents as they came to me after every presentation with plenty of que...

Lab 25 Reflection

Image
Lab 25 was the twelfth video to the whole Javascript30 series and what I have to do for this one was to use the console and have several unicorns and rainbows appear when a certain sequence of letters are typed. So basically, every time you type something on the website itself, the console will pick up every symbol or letter that is being typed. That's one part of this lab to work. Another part is to create some sort of "secret key" that whenever you type out that specific word, on the console it should appear as "DING DING" showing you typed the word right. Last but not least, with these functions settled into the Javascript coding, you are provided a link and a styling that includes of several and many unicorns and rainbows that will appear when "DING DING" happens. So, for my lab, I chose the word "lazlo" which is all lowercase and made the background white so that the user can enjoy of the colorful images that will pop up every time ...

Lab 24 Reflection

Image
Lab 24 was the eleventh video to the whole Javascript30 series and what I have to do for this one is to be able to implement a video from vimeo and have it actually up and running using Javascript in order to change how slow the characters move or how fast they talk. The first thing I actually did was style my website, so I added a moving gif in the back and added a nice google font for my headings. Afterwards came the hard part. Watching the video and doing the coding at the same time can get super complicated and annoying sometimes. If you miss one single step or don't understand what the function does, then the coding itself isn't even worth it and the website won't work. So, I had to be very careful with the way I was writing out the Javascript since many times, it wouldn't work for some reason. I did a lot of troubleshooting and it took me about two days to get the original video to even work. At the end, this practice felt useful as I can use these skills for fut...

Lab 23 Reflection

Javascript30 is an intense coding program which is free and anybody can join. It is designed to be able to complete 30 days worth of several Javascript aspects and skills in the matter of 30 hours or so. We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 23 was the tenth video to this whole series and what I have to do for this one is to create some sort of checklist and have boxes on the left side of the document to check each item/task. When you check one box, hold shift, and click another box, it will check all the boxes in between of it. This lab itself following the video was pretty easy and the result was cool. I never expected myself to do this sort of work yet till after high school since it seemed complicated at first. Yet, I had a lot of fun designing my website and seeing how clicking on one box and dragging it over the others while holding ...

College Fair on November 13, 2017

Image
On November 13, 2017, All CTE Academy students were lucky enough to experience a college fair taking place in the big gym. Many colleges attended like SUNY Binghamton, Queens College, City Tech, etc. The thing about these college fairs is that you are given the opportunity to expand on your knowledge regarding many colleges from either community, SUNY or CUNY. A lot of places to intern also went where they offer both paid and unpaid internships. These fairs are usually towards juniors or seniors who need more information on where they want to go and where they see themselves in the near future. I got a lot of intel from these places and I considered signing for many programs. After this fair, I had set my mind on only CUNY since SUNY was also an option for me but thinking about it carefully, I didn't want to apply for it anymore.    At the end, I did take in a lot of more information I didn't know of already and cleared up my final decisions for college.

We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 22 was the ninth video to this whole series and what I have to do for this one is also use the console for this as everything will be done on there again. Using console is boring in my opinion as not many users look at it. Only people who have knowledge in coding or some sort of background to it will actually take time out of being on a website and inspecting it and looking at the console. Well this lab incorporated much more on what the console does and it was harder in my opinion adding all of the information. At the end of the video, I realized this is only helpful in storing data but it really isn't ne...

Lab 21 Reflection

We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 21 was the eighth video to this whole series and this was a new concept that I had never done in code before as I had to incorporate the canvas in the code. All you had to do for this lab was play with it as if it were an actual canvas. Every time you draw on it by pressing on your mouse and moving it around on the page, you create a different stroke and color every single time. It was a lot of fun to be creative and just play with it as I have never done anything like this before. At the end, I shared this labs with friends so they could test it out and have as much as fun as I did.   Overall, this lab w...

Lab 20 Reflection

Javascript30 is an intense coding program which is free and anybody can join. It is designed to be able to complete 30 days worth of several Javascript aspects and skills in the matter of 30 hours or so. We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 20 was the seventh video to this whole series and was similar to Lab 17 in which I had to do everything on the console. When I refresh the console and look at it, it will show the information that I put regarding whether or not the information given is true or not. This lab itself was a continuation to lab 17 as it was day two of the array cardio, so there wasn't as much code involved in the console. I will try to use the console more often since I'll be able to make it an original lab and can prevent others from stealing code. It will also make my life easier in troubleshooting, which can such a pain! Th...

We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 19 was the sixth video to this whole series and basically all you had to do was to allow the user to type in a city or a state and all of the cities or states regarding those certain characters typed will show at the bottom of the input box. This lab itself can be seen to be useful as in getting information or doing research in general. One is be able to study several cities and states and memorize them in way of flashcards or just to practice which place is in what location. This lab can be useful in practicing for United States History as you will be able to remember places easier if it is used often. There wasn...

Lab 18 Reflection

Javascript30 is an intense coding program which is free and anybody can join. It is designed to be able to complete 30 days worth of several Javascript aspects and skills in the matter of 30 hours or so. We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 18 was the fifth video to this whole series and basically all you had to do was to create images I chose from online fit in one page and when you click on an image, it will grow larger and all the text that I put in the code will show in that image. This lab was pretty cool compared to the previous ones that we have done as its very responsive and I find it a great way to be creative. Learning these new techniques in coding will help me improve as a coder in general since I will able to implement these skills into new labs or other projects. I personally liked this lab a lot since I love animals and making this websit...

We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Lab 17 was the fourth video to this whole series and basically all you had to do was check the console of the page. You can check my right clicking on the mouse or using two fingers on a mac and you'll see some sort of tabs pop-up. You would click on the one that says "Inspect" and you'll be able to thoroughly look through the code and the console itself. In the coding, I wrote a lot about people's first and last name and years; it was a lot of information and you won't see this on the page but the console, which stores data. At the end, you would just refresh the page and you'll see a lot...

Lab 16 Reflection

Javascript30 is an intense coding program which is free and anybody can join. We had to watch a video for each day, which in them the guy would explain step by step to have the various skills of Javascript to function properly on any HTML Page. Then right after, we would have to download the starter kit in order to get the same files and work on it so that the javascript functions work based on the video. Lab 16 was to update CSS variables with Javascript. This means that I had to change the image with it's spacing, blur, and color of the background based on the horizontal scroll bar and color changer. I added a picture of the dolphins I saw last year at the Museum of Natural History because I really enjoyed that trip and the I personally love that picture because it brings back so many memories. I changed the background, added my personal labeling of the la...

Then right after, we would have to download the starter kit in order to get the same files and work on it so that the javascript functions work based on the video. Lab 15 was using both Javascript and CSS styling in order to make a clock; this lab is basically creating a live clock based on present time and having it work as seconds go by. It's literally a clock online. The thing is that one may get confused because both minute and hour hands look about the same length and people might get confused when looking at it. I would if I saw this for the first time. Aside though, it was a pretty simple and quick lab a...

Lab 14 Reflection

Image
For a day that Mrs. Ramirez wasn't in class, she gave us a simple task to do in class which would eventually be graded. Basically, our first task was to create an unplugged activity for freshmen in order to show them something cool during the Hour Of Code Week. After we wrote our ideas down, we would later be given the task to complete days assigned by Mrs. Ramirez on Javascript30. Lab 12 Reflection

Image
Well, for Lab 12, after Lab 11 which consisted of Javascript, JQuery and AJAX, we started learning more things such as JSON. After the lesson, I really didn't catch what JSON's function is. The only thing I actually grasped the concept of is that JSON is mainly for storing data while at the same time presenting the coding. So, technically speaking, you can write an array in the coding itself, a.k.a the data, but the object will only appear on the screen like a name and not the whole array. Since I brought that up, our lab was basically something related to such. We had to create a page in which we would list youtube videos but only certain parts of it would appear on the site.   Overall, this lab was very easy and simple. It was some sort of practice given to us by the teacher so that our knowledge in programming keeps expanding and whatnot. It was actually really fun doing this as we got to be creative. I will try to add this sort of practice in my future labs, pro...

Lab 9 Reflection

Image
Well, for Lab 9, we have been going through treacherous weeks of both Javascript and Jquery. It hasn't been easy as we have been given multiple tasks and sites that are broken in some manner, and as web client programmers, we have to figure out what exactly is the error and fix it. We are only given some hints or clues here and there on how to fix it but it's all up to mainly us to realize what is needed to add or get rid off in the code.  Most of our tasks this week has been all surrounded by the complete aspect of troubleshooting. Our task for this lab was to create a picture slideshow consisting of six pictures, six different captions for the six pictures, have the dots responsive based on the user and create the arrows. We were originally given all of the pictures and what they have to say. It was all on a html page already as a list but what Mrs. Ramirez wanted is for that list to be converted into a slideshow. Well, at first, I wasn't too sure on where to start as ...

Lab 11 Reflection

Image
This is the beginning before pressing the button Well, for Lab 11, after Lab 10 which consisted of both Javascript and JQuery, we started learning more things such as AJAX. I honestly don't know what its exact meaning is but I just understand how it lets you put information away to let other pop up. Our task for this lab was to create a basic html file and with the help of AJAX, and then change 5 different aspects of the page with it. So, as you can see with the picture to the left of this paragraph, that was the basic html file I created that had a blue constant background and simple wording. It was very simple and easy. Then, Mrs. Ramirez gave us code to implement that would change the styling of the page by having a pop-up window say "Successful" from pressing the button. The button is what triggers a major change in the styling. As you can see to the right of this paragraph, after you press the button, the page turns into a pink background with several differe...

We are only given some hints or clues here and there on how to fix it but it's all up to mainly us to realize what is needed to add or get rid off in the code.  Our task for this lab was to make the three images at the bottom of the page move and do a slideshow. The one on the left had to move horizontally, the middle had to fade in and out, and the right had to transition up and down. I literally had no clue on where to begin as I was focusing on the images itself. I did a lot of research regarding transitions available using either CSS, Javascript and JQuery. Yet, after 2 periods of browsing so many pages, I ended up the same I began with nothing. I was getting very frustrated and m...
